Accessibility statement

What works, what we have not yet tested, and how to tell us

URL: /accessibility · Last updated: 25 September 2026

This statement covers the aihtax web application at app.aihtax.co.uk. We want as many people as possible to be able to keep their books and file to HMRC with it, including people who use a keyboard only, a screen reader, or a magnified display.

How accessible this is

Partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 level AA. "Partially conformant" means some parts do not fully conform. We would rather say that than claim a level we have not demonstrated.

What we have done:

  • The Making Tax Digital journey, by a person. On 25 September 2026 we walked it end to end with the VoiceOver screen reader on macOS, using the keyboard only: creating an account, connecting to HMRC, entering a National Insurance number and syncing, reviewing obligations for each business, and submitting a quarterly update. Each step could be completed.
  • Automated WCAG 2.2 AA checks (axe) run against sign-in, sign-up, the legal pages, the dashboard, receipts, transactions, matching, the ledger, the MTD screens and settings. They run on every change, and a serious or critical violation fails the build.
  • Colour contrast across buttons, status badges, amounts and navigation was measured and corrected to meet the 4.5:1 minimum.
  • Interactive controls use real buttons and links with accessible names, rather than clickable containers.

What we have not tested yet

Automated checks find roughly a third of accessibility problems — the part a machine can judge. These remain untested, and we are not claiming they work:

  • Other screen readers. Only VoiceOver on macOS has been used, and only on the journey above. NVDA and JAWS on Windows have not been tested.
  • Other screens. Receipts, transactions, matching, the ledger and settings have not been walked with a screen reader or keyboard only. Complex screens such as receipt matching may be hard to use that way.
  • Uploaded documents. Receipts and statements you upload are your own files; we cannot make a scanned image accessible, though the extracted figures are presented as text.
  • Speech recognition software, and magnification beyond 200%.

Telling us about a problem

If you cannot use part of aihtax, please tell us — it is the fastest way for it to get fixed, and we would rather hear it than not.

Email [email protected]. Say what you were trying to do, which page you were on, and what got in the way. We aim to reply within 3 working days. If you need information from the product in a different format, ask and we will find one.

If you are not happy with our response, the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS) can advise you.

How this statement was prepared

Prepared on 25 September 2026. It reflects automated testing against WCAG 2.2 AA, our own walk-through of the Making Tax Digital journey with VoiceOver and the keyboard, and our review of the product. It has not been audited by an external organisation. We will update it as more of the product is tested by hand, and review it at least every six months.
